Final process

Image
Moving on,  painted the black part of the wings on to the fabric, I did this first so if I were to make any mistakes or paint out the lines when I start applying my colour I could easily clean it up with the black. I then painted all the colours inside the spaces and decided to paint the borders of the top pink. Using acrylic paint I painted the bottom part red and yellow giving it an orange blend in the middle. I did the same for the top using green and blue giving it a green blend in the middle.   I finally ended with the borders being painted pink. Doing this I have understood how to paint of fabric, I have developed my ability to blend acyclic colours on cotton fabric using less water and a larger brush.

I then placed my handmade pattern on the fabric and cut it out after cutting it out I used saftey pins to hold it in so I would be able to sew them together                                    I then hammered the holes using a hammer and eyelids    I did the same thing for the other half    If I were to make this again I would make the 2 wings equal and adding more clean edges. I would also create holes like the ones at the top of the butterfly wings. Make these tops I have learnt how to make holes using eyelids and a hammer.

3D outcome ( pattern making)

For my Butterfly top I was unable to find a pattern that was the shape of the butterfly I wanted and my size as well was considered, I decided to then be creative and make my own pattern.  I used masking tape and taped the shape to my body, I then used a pair of scissors to clean up the edges. After that I removed it and transferred it on to my fabric.

3D final outcome Research

Image
In my own research I found out that the butterfly top was originally inspired by Cher's butterfly look which she wore to the grammy's in 1974, she wore this top along side a matching a hairclip. The top came back in the early 2000s appearing on the red carpet but in a better design as seen on Mariah Carey. Emmanuel Ungaro was the famous designer behind this recreation look. He showcased this embedded butterfly top in his 2000 haute couture spring runway show. He used this design in different forms on the runway. This piece was a perfect blend of creativity and elegance, showcasing Ungaro's incredible design skills. The butterfly top featured intricate embroidery with vibrant colors that made it look like a piece of art. the top had a beautiful use of appliqué, where fabric pieces were sewn onto the base material to create the butterfly design. The embroidery was exquisite, with fine stitching that added depth and texture to the butterfly wings. The top also had a peplum, ...

material Research ( final project)

For my material research I would be looking at organic cotton. The reason why I have chosen organic cotton for my fashion design project is because it is more sustainable  Organic cotton is more sustainable and ethical than regular cotton, protecting the environment. (Cariki, 2021) organic cotton is harvested using sustainable methods that do not rely on chemical defoliants. This reduces the risk of chemical exposure for farm workers and surrounding communities, promoting better health outcomes (Cariki, 2021) Another cool thing about organic cotton is that it uses less water. Normal cotton needs a lot of water to grow, which can be a big problem in places where water is already scarce. According to the WWF, it takes 2,700 liters of water to produce the cotton needed for just one t-shirt, whereas organic cotton only uses 243 liters  (You Underwear, 2021).   Organic cotton farming techniques help the soil hold onto water better, so they don't need to use as much. Fabric Painting (testing)

Image
Before I start to paint on my main project I decided to test how the fabric   and paint work together, I did a few paintings on the fabric and this is how it came out.  I would say, I preferred painting on cotton  and not the linen only because the cotton held the water in the paint pretty well while  on the linen the paint was sinking through, I used acrylic paints for these and because I have used them to paint on fabric previously I have no complaints about it.

To create the holes in front of the vest I used eyelid, a cutter to make the pre hole and a hammer to insert the eyelids into the fabric                                                                                                                                                                                      final Result

for the back of my vest, I layed out the pattern which I made using my original vest as a guide and my body measurements, on top of the fabric, then I cut out the shape leaving seem allowance.  Moving on, I pinned the fabric at the edges I wanted to close, to make it clean.  After sewing the back of the vest, I sewed the front of the vest to the back at the sides.  for the stitching and seems I used a straight line stitching                                                                                                               ...

Process shoots (patterns)

Image
I started by making my patterns, I traced out the patterns on paper after I measured myself with a measuring tape. I took my measurements and marked them on the paper then I used a pair of scissors to cut out the pattern. I did this for one side of my shoulder, bust, and waist. I then moved on and did the same thing with my back.  After cutting out my patterns I pinned them to the fabric using fabric pins. I then used a pair of scissors to cut out the fabric while the pattern was placed on top. I did this for the back pattern as well.

Style Development Update

Image
look 1 This dress is all about embracing the beauty of spring and the wonder of butterflies. It's got this cute butterfly wing detail on the side that adds a touch of whimsy and makes it totally unique. And the skirt is like the perfect length for showing off your legs and twirling around in.The material for the skirt, is a flowy chiffon fabric that moves with you and makes you feel like you're floating on air. And the corset is made of soft leather that hugs your curves just right, and the butterfly wing is made of cotton fabric and wires. I choose butterflies as an inspiration for this look because they're like little bursts of color and joy, reminding you that change is beautiful and that anything is possible. I wanted to capture that feeling of magic and transformation in this dress, so you can feel like you're spreading your wings and embracing all the beauty and wonder that spring has to offer.                     ...

Materials Research update

Linen Fabric Research  For this project I wanted to pick the best fabric that would bring my design to life. Among the lots of options, linen stands out as my fabric of choice for numerous reasons. Because linen is a natural fabric made from Flax plants it is one of the most sustainable fabrics known to man  (Cariki,2021) Firstly, linen has this effortlessly chic vibe that adds a touch of sophistication to any garment. Its natural texture gives off this laid-back yet refined aesthetic that I absolutely love. Because I'm designing a festival garment, linen lends a sense of elevated look that's perfect for making a fashion statement.  Linen is a very comfortable fabric to wear, especially when the temperature rises. Its breathable, allowing air to circulate and keeping the person cool and comfortable all day long. Plus, it has this amazing ability to absorb moisture, so I never have to worry about feeling sweaty or sticky, even in the sweltering heat.  ...

Materials Research ( fabric Painting)

For the materials in which I would use for my 3d outcome, my original idea was to create a top using cheetah print, but over the weekend I have thought it out and changed my mind. This time I will be using a white/creme Linen material for the top in which I would be using fabric paint to create hand drawn patterns of flowers. This idea was inspired by contemporary high fashion brand KAI.      KAI As a fashion design student and artist, painting on fabric is something I have always wanted to do! It's like taking your clothes and turning them into your own personal canvas. Imagine being able to wear your own artwork. So, why do I love the idea of painting on my fabric so much? Well, it lets me add my own special touch to what i am making. I can use different colors, patterns, and techniques to create pieces that are totally one of a kind. Doing this I can experiment with all sorts of cool effects, like watercolors or bold brushstrokes, to make my designs really pop li...

Concept Design

Image
For this task I have designed 4 other body suits taking inspiration from the first one I created, In the image above for the first design I removed the sleeves from the power shoulder just leaving the blue/teal power shoulder, I made the power shoulders a turtle neck to elevate the look. I left the cheetah prints on the body suit and boots but I also removed the straps that connects the boots to the body suit.  For the second design I bought the sleeves back but made it cheetah print, as well as the body suit ( might be my final design for this garment), I made the boots teal instead of the cheetah prints and I connected the straps back together.    For design number 3 at the top right corner, I changed the body suit to a bikini 2 piece, the bra and pant are still with the cheetah print while the power shoulder sleeves and thigh high boots are teal. I also got rid of the turtle neck and connected it to the bra.    for the last design a...

In our class with Zoe I designed 3 2d designs that  will be in my upcoming collection, This task was just to experiment the type of colors and designs I want to use. For the first designed I was inspired by the Venus dress 1995 by mugler. This blue and baby pink dress is inspired by the sea shells you find on the beach, with this dress I wanted to give the illusion of the the person wearing it coming out of the shell, making the top half of the dress ocean blue to signify her being the sea and the bottom of  the dress being the shell. For the second design I decided to take inspiration from butterflies, I wanted to create something that stood out from the others, behind the butterfly wing hanging from the top right off her shoulder is a peach colored blouse matched with a ruffle skirt paired with white knee high boots. For the last design I decided to create a cheetah body suit paired with power shoulder sleeves. This design was inspired by my love for the cheetah...

Materials

Image
For my materials I will be using recycle cotton fabrics, I would be sourcing my fabric from charity shops in the city. I have decided to use recycled fabrics in my outfits because, it helps reduce the amount of waste, it gives new life to materials that would have been discarded, recycling fabrics helps in less pollution. Lastly, using recycled fabrics helps in promoting sustainability and reducing the need for new raw materials. The fabric I have chosen to use for my 3d project is a cheetah print cotton fabric.  and for the bottom I would be using recycled jeans I would get from the thrift store.
