Artist research, Diébédo francis kéré

The name of the artist I have chosen to research is Diébédo francis kéré. He is an incredible architect from Burkina Faso. He is known for his designs that blend traditional African building techniques with modern style. His work is based on his love for creating architecture that sees the needs and aspirations of the local community. His designs incorporate natural ventilation and renewable materials Kere's most notable projects include the Gando Primary School in Burkina Faso, which he won an award for,
The success of Gando Primary School awarded him the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004, and was the catalyst for establishing his practice, Kéré Architecture, in Berlin, Germany in 2005 (Diébédo Francis Kéré: The Pritzker Architecture Prize). which he designed to be both functional and visually stunning, which showcased his unique approach to architecture on an international stage. His works like the gando primary school, gando teaching house and Naaba Belem Goumma Secondary School. These buildings inspire my work because of the terracotta materials, and structure of the building. The interior of these buildings have an open window which reflect light inside the room, I want to take inspiration from this by adding an open roof with arches to bring the same cast of light to my work.

From the above image you can see a clear reference of what I talked about. The interior of the building shown above has light cast into the room, this is a clear idea of what I want the arches in my room to do. I absolutely love the idea of having light cast into the interior through the arches I designed! It adds a surreal quality to the space. Imagine the way the sunlight would create beautiful patterns and playing with shadows on the walls and floors. It would create a calming atmosphere, bringing natural beauty to the space.

Not only would it enhance the aesthetics of the architecture, but it would also create a connection to the outside environment. Having natural light flowing through the arches would not only illuminate the space but also uplift the mood and create a sense of openness. It's a wonderful way to incorporate  the beauty of nature into the design.

  1. Great subject for research. His work has a strong connection to your project. I am interested in how you can incorporate his ideas about using light. Will the roof have glass panels? Or be open to the elements? Is there a way of including your ideas around traditional patterns?
