Artist Research: Tosin Oshinowo

 The artist I have chosen to research is Tosin Oshinowo. I am looking at her Coral Pavilion beach house. The Coral Pavilion Beach House is such a creative project! Designed by Tosin Oshinowo,the project has a blend of contemporary design and sustainability, It has a modern vibe but it is also being Eco friendly. This space is filled with natural light from the open spaces which I would love to incorporate in my design. creating a serene atmosphere that's just perfect for relaxation. The design takes inspiration from the local context and culture, making it a unique piece of architecture that stands out for its elegance and functionality.





The use of materials and the structure's relationship with the environment are key aspects of this design. It's all about creating a  balance with the surrounding landscape, while also providing a luxurious living experience, which is what i want to do in my project.With its open spaces and connection to the outdoors, the Coral Pavilion Beach House is a testament to Oshinowo's ability to craft spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also deeply rooted in their environmental and cultural context.As an architect, she introduced her own design ethos, which she refers as Afro Minimalism, a concept she says references modernism and revolves around use of materials that enable her to challenge conventionality while nodding to her identity as a Yoruba Nigerian.(Owoh, 2023)

 we use brick unlike in some western countries that use wood. Or very hard working materials like granite and stone,(Owoh, 2023). She uses Bricks for her materials, she metioned in the interview that bricks is long lasting and doesn't need any high maintenance. For my project i have also been inspired to use bricks, In nigeria they're great at keeping houses cool, especially under the hot sun. Plus, bricks are sturdy and can last a long time, even in heavy rains or the occasional flood. They're also fire-resistant, which is a huge plus for safety. And since they're made from clay, which is plentiful in many parts of Nigeria, they can be more affordable and sustainable. It's a win the environment and resident. It will be built with bricks and layered with clay.

    Good, this architect has a strong relevance to your project. You have mentioned materials and space. Have you looked at the shapes and patterns from Nigerian culture that you could incorporate into your designs?

    You could have discussed this design in more detail particularly looking at space planning and using more than one reference as that is not really research - please also be careful about formatting as you have some odd formatting and a highlight please past as plain text to avoid this or clear the formatting once you have completed
